The Department was established in the year 1995 and has fairly well-equipped research laboratories with facility for tissue culture, toxicological works and animal house. The Department provides sophisticated biochemical testing service for disease and diagnosis particularly for genetic diseases. It has organized a number of international and national conferences, workshops and short-term courses. Apart from undertaking research programmes funded by various national and international organizations, the Department is presently engaged in ICMR and UGC research project. The Department has highly qualified Permanent Faculty Members and Visiting Faculties from various institutions.

Academics

The Department offers a 3 year UG degree and a 2 year PG degree in Biochemistry. The courses focus on the latest advancements in the area of biochemistry, Bio-innovations and Environmental sciences. Importance is given in the area of plant biochemistry, Environmental biochemistry, Medicinal chemistry and toxicology.

Research Focus

The thrust areas of research work conducted by the department during the past years were: Biogas production, Phytochemicals, callus induction, Environmental Biochemistry and toxicology. Also we cater to areas including Cancer Biology, Enzyme Technology, Anti diabetic activity of Medicinal plants and bioactive substances of Natural origin.
