The School

To scale great heights, a firm foundation is the most fundamental requirement. At Karpagam University's School of Architecture, it is this philosophy that drives us to build a strong base for our students, one that allows them to reach out to the skies. From the expertise of internationally acclaimed architects as guest faculty to internships in eminent architectural firms, our students don't just get an education on high-rise buildings, they learn how to rise high.

The unique feature of the School is the course structure and updated curriculum which insists on inculcating abilities to visualize, conceive, formulate and design. The School strives to impart knowledge in emerging architectural areas such as virtual reality, sustainable design, Computer Aided Design through digital interactive learning systems. The focus of the School of Architecture is to develop and mould students into professional architects through academic learning, practical exposure, team work, creative management skills and participation in extra-curricular activities.

The Course

The School of Architecture has been designed to be a blueprint to building futures, the first step that students take towards success. It currently offers a five year full-time B.Arch programme from the academic year 2009-2010, duly recognized by the Council of Architecture, New Delhi. The approved intake for the B.Arch course is currently being upgraded from 40 to 80* seats. (* - subject to Council of Architecture Inspection and Approval)

Course Scheme

The major subjects in the course curriculum include Architectural Design, Architectural Graphics, Building Materials and Construction, Climatology, History and Contemporary Architecture, Architectural Theory, Computer Applications in Architecture, Landscape and Interiors, Urban Design and Conservation, Project Management and Professional Practice etc. Besides these, civil engineering subjects vital for architects such as Mechanics and Design of structures, Surveying and Levelling also form part of the course. General subjects such as Environmental Science and Communicative English are also included in the curriculum for holistic development of the students.

Faculty

The core faculty comprises a young and dynamic team of registered architects, engineers with diverse experience in architectural practice and teaching. Practicing architects, professional artists and consulting engineers form the visiting faculty team. The core team is ably supported by experienced faculty members from the Civil Engineering, Mathematics and English departments. Faculty members actively engage in consulting work and research to update their knowledge and also participate in related conferences, seminars / workshops / training programmes regularly.

Facilities

The School of Architecture is well equipped with the best drawing studios having locker facilities, lecture theatres with projection facilities, class rooms with computing facilities, fully-loaded computer applications laboratory, exclusive library with reading space, material museum etc. The School is developing a Building Science Laboratory to carry out climatic and environmental investigations in building design. In addition to this, the School utilizes the Central Library, Central Computing Center, Central Workshop, Surveying & Levelling Laboratory, Seminar Hall and Auditorium, Sports Facilities and Hostels of the University. There are seperate hostels for boys and girls within the campus.

Student Works and Activities

The diverse background of our students provides for variety and innovation in the classrooms and studios. Design projects are carried out both individually and in teams in order to learn from mutual sharing and collaboration. Students' club SPARCZ promotes socio-cultural activities and recreation for overall personality development. Students also regularly participate in symposiums, workshops, study tours, industrial visits and have won many prizes recently.

News and Events

The School regularly organizes workshops and symposiums for the benefit of the students, where neighboring schools are also invited for these events. Some of the major events organized by the School include: Career Guidance Seminar organized jointly with the IIA-Coimbatore Centre; Regional Design Symposium – Oblique; World Habitat Day celebrations organized jointly with the IIA-Coimbatore Centre; Coimbatore Vizha organized joint with the CII. The School released its first annual newsletter 'MOSAIC' during the regional design symposium.

The School of Architecture has been selected by the US India Educational Foundation for the Fulbright Senior Specialist Program 2010-2011. As part of this program, Prof.Joseph Aranha from Texas Tech University, US will spend 3 months at Karpagam University beginning July 2011 and collaborate with the school.

Karpagam University has entered into an MoU with Mekelle University, Ethiopia. As part of this MoU, video-conferencing, faculty and student exchange programs will be undertaken shortly with select group of students and faculty visiting their campus in the coming semesters.
