Karpagam University’s department of Microbiology was established in 2002 with more than 5000 sq. ft. of laboratory facility. It comprises all essential equipment and provides an enthusiastic atmosphere for the students to work around. In addition, the Department has received major research grants from UGC, DST and TNSCST for research work and published many research articles in reputed national and international peer reviewed journals. The Department is always alive with various programs, seminars conferences, and training sessions to enhance the learning of the students. It has also organized, participated and presented several papers in seminars and conferences.

Academics

The Department offers 3 year UG degree and a 2 year PG degree in Microbiology. Emphasis is laid on the latest advancements in the field.

Facilities

The Research department of Microbiology has a separate laboratory for undergraduate, postgraduate and research. In addition, it has a separate area for preparation, inoculation, instrumentation and store room.

Research Focus

The Department of Microbiology mainly concentrates on the production of various microbial primary, secondary and intermediate metabolites from native isolates and its application in various industries, healthcare, food, paper etc.

Objectives

• To explore the native microbes for the development of novel microbial metabolite through bioprocess engineering technology
• Discovery of new microbial metabolites which open up new fields of application
• Investigation of microbial product development for various global needs
• Development of genetic tools and strategies to facilitate more effective functioning of microbial system
